Underhill Cottage

Underhill Cottage

I have chosen to study a small gate lodge in Dunmanway for my Conservation lecture this semester. I will be researching the history of the building, surveying it and proposing a plan of conservation and reuse for the building.

I surveyed the building today, it is in fairly poor repair as shown in the photos. The craftsmanship is amazing, far beyond what is common today, bearing in mind this was just a tiny lodge.

As W. B. Yeats said “The Architecture is the biography of the nation” it’s such a pity that little gems like this are left to deteriate like this.

Passive Solar House

Passive Solar House

The brief for this assignment was to design a zero energy house for a family of four. The first dilema was to reach a definition of Sustainable Design, mine was heavily influenced by my on going research on Cradle to Cradle design. This lead me to explore the healthiness of current Sustainable solutions and materials, evaluating their ‘Ecological Intellegence”
The final design was to be built of straw bale and rammed earth, combining contemporary design, traditional Irish form and low impact construction.

Straw Bale Pavilion

This is a little pavilion that I am planning to build at the start of the summer in order to experiment with straw bale building. These are preliminary concept drawings of the building.
