Underhill Cottage In The Post Medieval Survey

Underhill Cottage In The Post Medieval Survey

I have managed to unearth some pictures and info about Underhill cottage in the Post Medieval Survey, which was carried out in 1985. They date the building as pre-1840’s, but there is no information given on the original owner. It lists the current owner as Frank O’Brien, who had bought it from ‘Sullivan’ 25 years before who in turn had bought it from ‘Wagner’ 25 years before that. As the pictures show the house itself was in pretty bad repair back at the time of the survey, which obviously lead to it eventually being knocked.
The gate lodge itself, while starting to deteriorate was noted as being lived in! There is no details on its occupants however which is a pity. So the next port of call is the Registry of Deeds, perhaps the owners of the lodge bought the land when the estate was subdivided.

I’ve just finished the plan and model model of the gate lodge, the attached images give an impression of how it might have looked before it started to deteriorate. The survey threw up some interesting construction details particularly to do with the eaves and the plasterwork. The next stage is to work through the problems that need to be rectified as well as comming up with a proposed new use for the building and, because of its size, working on a design for an extension.
